Victorian Chalcedony Cherub Fob
Circa 1860. This 9KT gold Victorian fob features a finely carved chalcedony intaglio depicting a romanticized heraldic shield surrounded by cherubic figures and draped garlands.
The translucent chalcedony offers a luminous backdrop for the engraving, allowing the delicate details of the cherubs and shield to emerge with remarkable clarity. Originally intended as a wax seal, this fob would have been worn on a gentleman’s watch chain, used to impress its design into sealing wax for letters and correspondence. While inspired by traditional heraldry, the motif leans more toward symbolic expression than formal family identification, reflecting the Victorian fascination with emotion, romance, and classical imagery.
A beautifully preserved example of 19th-century craftsmanship, rich with meaning and quiet charm.
