Victorian Lava Cameo Brooch

Circa 1870. This beautiful Victorian Italian cameo was carved from ash rocks and is bezel set within an 18KT gold snake frame. During the Victorian Era, those traveling on a Grand Tour of Europe were fascinated by Pompeii, and lava jewelry sold at the site made excellent souvenirs. Donning the lava jewelry back at home identified the wearer as not only a world traveler but a purveyor of fine culture. This cameo is in excellent condition and is a coveted collector's item.
