Circa 1870 Victorian Silver & Niello Bird Locket
Dating to circa 1870, this Victorian silver and niello locket features an exotic bird with dramatically sweeping plumage, rendered in raised, finely textured metalwork with darkened surfaces and gold-colored highlights. Beneath the bird, an engraved botanical composition of curling vines, detailed leaves, and clusters of raised berries creates a richly layered scene. A warm-toned metal border frames the rectangular locket, complementing the contrasting colors of the decorative elements.
The hinged locket opens to reveal two compartments lined with vivid red ribbed fabric, each fitted with a metal retaining band. The reverse is unadorned, while a substantial silver bail allows the piece to be worn as a pendant.
Niello is a historic decorative technique in which a dark metallic compound is fused into engraved recesses to create contrast with the surrounding metal. Particularly popular in 19th-century decorative metalwork, niello was often combined with engraving and contrasting finishes to produce intricate designs. The interplay of raised ornament, darkened details, and finely engraved silver gives this locket its distinctive depth and character.
