Victorian Pearl & Labradorite Necklace
Dating to circa 1900, this late Victorian silver festoon necklace features round and pear-shaped cabochon labradorites accented with small pearls. The gemstones are arranged in a symmetrical, articulated design, with pear-shaped drops suspended beneath the curved line of round cabochons. Delicate silver scrollwork, geometric connectors, and small spherical ornaments frame the stones, which display shifting flashes of blue against their dark gray body color.
The central pear-shaped labradorite pendant is detachable, allowing the necklace to be worn with or without its longest drop. The articulated construction gives the necklace flexibility and movement, while the open-backed settings reveal the individual gemstone mountings.
Labradorite is known for labradorescence, an optical phenomenon that produces flashes of color as light interacts with the gemstone's internal structure. The articulated design makes particularly effective use of this quality, allowing the stones to move independently and reveal changing flashes of blue. The removable pendant also reflects the versatility found in some late Victorian jewelry, where adaptable elements allowed a single jewel to be worn in different ways.
