Victorian Garnet Memorial Brooch / Pendant

Dating to circa 1860, this Victorian pendant and brooch features a deep claret-red, heart-shaped garnet cabochon, bezel-set in 15KT gold. A silver star set with rose-cut diamonds is applied to its surface, their soft shimmer a striking contrast to the smooth, dark garnet beneath.

Above the heart, sculptural gold leaves curl around a tiny flower, adding another layer of naturalistic detail. The piece was designed to be worn as a pendant or brooch, while the reverse includes a compartment meant to hold a photograph or other personal keepsake.

Victorian jewelers frequently used recognizable symbols to communicate ideas that might otherwise remain unspoken.
