Georgian 5-Garnet Ring
Circa 1820. This beautiful Georgian ring features five foiled-back garnets totaling approximately 0.80 carats. Set in warm 14KT gold, the garnets display deep wine-red and purplish hues that come alive in changing light.
Before modern gemstone cutting and electric lighting, foiling was used to increase brilliance and intensify color, allowing gemstones to shimmer beautifully in the glow of candles and hearth fires. Today, surviving foiled-back jewelry is especially prized by collectors for its authenticity and its connection to the craftsmanship of the period.
The ring's simple yet elegant five-stone arrangement reflects the refined aesthetics of the early 19th century, when richly colored garnets were admired for both their beauty and symbolism. Long associated with protection, loyalty, and enduring friendship, garnets were among the most beloved gemstones of the Georgian era.
Foiled-back gemstones deserve special care. Moisture can damage the foil beneath the stones, affecting their color and brilliance over time.
To preserve your ring, avoid exposure to water, cleaning solutions, perfumes, lotions, and excessive humidity. Remove before washing hands, bathing, swimming, or exercising. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and store in a dry place when not being worn.
The ring measures 7.7mm wide at the top, rises 3.2mm above the finger, tapering to 1.6mm wide and 0.8mm thick at the base of the shank.
