Georgian Enamel & Pearl Mourning Ring

Dating to circa 1830, this Georgian mourning ring is crafted in 18KT gold and richly decorated with black enamel. At its center is an oval cabochon garnet surrounded by twelve natural seed pearls, with additional pearls set into the shoulders. Fine gold borders trace the black enamel along the gallery and shank, emphasizing the ring's dramatic sculptural form.

Inside the broad shank is an elegantly engraved monogram, a private detail that reinforces the jewel's personal nature.

Black enamel was strongly associated with mourning jewelry during the Georgian and Victorian periods, while pearls were frequently incorporated into sentimental and memorial jewels and linked to purity, remembrance, and tears. Garnets also carried various historical associations, including constancy and affection. 

Nearly two centuries after it was made, the ring still preserves something remarkably intimate: public symbols of remembrance on its exterior and a private identity engraved within.
