Circa 1900 9KT Gold Long Guard Chain

$4,200.00
SKU A23853

Dating to circa 1900, this exceptionally long 9KT gold chain measures about 55 inches and features closely linked curb-style links, creating a continuous ribbon of warm gold.

The extraordinary length is central to the design. Long guard chains were fashionable during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and could be worn in a variety of ways, looped or doubled around the neck, or used to suspend a watch, locket, pendant, or other personal objects.

A swivel clasp provides a practical attachment point for adding a favorite antique pendant or locket. Rather than being merely decorative, the fitting reflects the versatility that made long chains such useful components of a period jewelry wardrobe.

Long guard chains have roots in functional chains used to secure watches and other personal objects, but their generous lengths also allowed them to become decorative jewels in their own right. By circa 1900, a chain such as this could combine ornament and utility, adapting to what its wearer chose to attach and how she chose to arrange it.

At 55 inches, this chain wasn't designed for only one configuration. Its length is part of its purpose, letting a single jewel change with what it carries and how it is worn.

The chain measures 55 inches in length.
