Art Deco Diamond Ring with Lab-Grown Sapphire Accents
Dated 1921, this Art Deco platinum ring features a .75-carat old European-cut diamond with VS2 clarity and F color. Four round single-cut diamonds, totaling .10 carats, accent the setting, while two bezel-set square laboratory-grown blue sapphires add touches of color along the shoulders.
The platinum mounting features intricate pierced filigree with hand-engraved details and geometric ornamentation. The openwork extends beneath the diamond into the gallery, where scrolling patterns and finely worked metal create an architectural setting that is as carefully finished from the side as it is from above.
Engraved inside the shank is "HFM to HAC Nov. 26 - '21," preserving a personal dedication and an exact date. The laboratory-grown sapphires are another interesting reflection of the period. By the early 20th century, synthetic corundum was being produced commercially and incorporated into fine jewelry, offering jewelers consistent color and new design possibilities. Their presence in this ring illustrates how traditional craftsmanship and modern gemstone technology could coexist in a single jewel.
