1980s Star Sapphire Pendant

$13,000.00
SKU CH3195

Circa 1980. This striking vintage 14KT gold pendant centers on an extraordinary 49.50-carat cabochon-cut natural star sapphire bezel-set within a substantial polished gold mounting. The sapphire displays a soft blue-gray body color with visible silken inclusions characteristic of natural star sapphires, creating the luminous internal texture prized in fine corundum.

The pendant’s bold sculptural setting reflects the confident jewelry design language of the late 20th century, where clean architectural forms were paired with exceptional gemstones. Star sapphires exhibit asterism, an optical phenomenon caused by needle-like rutile inclusions intersecting within the stone. Under directional light, these inclusions create the floating star effect that has fascinated collectors for centuries. Highly valued examples combine strong asterism with pleasing translucency and substantial size, qualities beautifully embodied in this pendant. The heavy 14KT gold frame features two flush-set, round, mixed-cut natural blue sapphires and two flush-set, synthetic cubic zirconia.

With its nearly 50-carat sapphire, elegant goldwork, and distinctly modernist presentation, this piece occupies a compelling intersection between gemstone collector jewelry and late-20th-century design.

Appraised Value: $14,100

The pendant measures 46.4mm by 32.4mm.
