Victorian French Diamond Cluster Earrings
Dating to circa 1900, these late Victorian earrings are crafted in platinum-topped 18KT gold, each centered by an old mine-cut diamond surrounded by a closely set halo of additional old mine-cut diamonds.
The two center diamonds weigh approximately 1.86 carats in total, with SI1-I1 clarity and G-H color. Their surrounding old mine-cut diamonds add approximately 3.00 carats, with SI1-SI2 clarity and G-H color, bringing the earrings to an impressive 4.86 carats total diamond weight.
What makes these earrings particularly successful is how little metal the eye perceives from the front. The closely arranged diamonds form compact circular clusters, with the platinum settings visually receding behind the stones. The earrings are finished with lever backs and bear French owl import hallmarks, indicating that the gold was assayed in France as foreign-made rather than establishing France as the earrings' country of manufacture.
Old mine-cut diamonds were individually cut by hand, typically with cushion-like outlines, relatively high crowns, small tables, and large facets. Their proportions naturally vary from stone to stone, so a cluster like this lacks the mechanical uniformity of a modern diamond halo. Instead, the individual stones contribute slightly different flashes of light, giving the composition its characteristic antique texture.
Appraised Value: $26,350
The earrings measure 14.9mm tall and 14.3mm wide, and are finished with lever backs.
