Circa 1860 Etruscan Revival Beryl & Pearl Gold Bracelet
Dating to circa 1860, this Victorian bracelet is crafted in 15KT gold and features an elaborate circular medallion in the Etruscan Revival style. Six foil-backed green beryls surround a creamy white pearl, creating a floral composition against the richly worked gold.
The medallion is constructed in concentric layers. Delicate twisted-wire borders alternate with rows of applied gold beads and finely textured edges, drawing the eye inward. There, the green beryls form six petals around the pearl, while loops of fine wirework echo the shape of a second, larger blossom behind them.
Etruscan Revival jewelry emerged from the intense 19th-century European interest in archaeological discoveries and the jewelry of the ancient Mediterranean world. Jewelers studied surviving Etruscan goldwork and drew inspiration from techniques including granulation, filigree, and intricate applied wire decoration. Revival jewelry did not simply copy ancient forms; Victorian jewelers adapted this archaeological vocabulary into fashionable contemporary jewels.
The foil-backed green beryls deserve attention too. Foiling was used behind gemstones to manipulate their appearance, intensifying color or altering the way light returned through a stone. This bracelet is a wonderful example of what Etruscan Revival jewelry does so well: ornament is built from the metal itself.
