Art Deco 3.08-Carat Diamond & Synthetic Sapphire Ring
Dating to circa 1930, this platinum Art Deco ring features a commanding 3.08-carat round brilliant-cut natural diamond, graded SI1 clarity and L color. Its warmer color is framed by cool platinum and crisp white accent diamonds. On either side, two bezel-set triangle mixed-cut lab-grown sapphires introduce sharp flashes of blue.
Twenty bead-set single-cut natural diamonds, weighing approximately .30 carats in total with VS2-SI1 clarity and G-H color, trace the setting's upper and lower edges. Pierced work, engraved details, and fine milgrain complete the platinum mount, adding texture without competing with the design's strong geometry.
The lab-grown sapphires are an important part of this ring's history. By the early 20th century, laboratory-grown corundum had become available to jewelers, offering the intense, consistent color particularly suited to the bold contrasts of Art Deco design. In period jewelry, synthetic gemstones can be original components of a jewel and part of the story of technological innovation in jewelry making.
