Victorian French Tri-Color Gold Locket Necklace

Circa 1870. Crafted in 18KT gold, this French Victorian necklace exemplifies the elegance and technical refinement for which nineteenth-century French goldsmiths are celebrated. A finely woven snake-link chain supports an elaborate pendant composition featuring decorative tri-color gold stations, a watch-chain-inspired T-bar, a flowing tassel, and an egg-shaped locket.

Executed in rose, yellow, and green gold, the richly textured ornamentation reflects the Victorian fascination with color and surface design. French jewelers excelled at creating visual interest through goldwork alone, relying on engraving, chasing, and contrasting hues rather than gemstones to achieve depth and sophistication. 

The T-bar originated as a functional component of Victorian watch chains but evolved into a decorative motif in its own right.
