Circa 1880 Victorian Garnet Floral Necklace

Dating to circa 1880, this Victorian necklace is crafted in garnet gold and set with richly colored faceted garnets. Measuring approximately 16 inches, the necklace features repeating floral clusters that gradually lead the eye to a more elaborate central arrangement.

At the center, the repeating floral vocabulary develops into a crescent moon and star-like floral motif, surrounded by graduated garnets and finished with an articulated drop. Celestial imagery was popular in Victorian jewelry, where moons and stars could evoke guidance, hope, constancy, and the heavens, though their meaning varied by wearer and context. 

"Garnet gold” is a historical term encountered particularly in 19th-century garnet jewelry and should not automatically be interpreted as solid or karat gold. The term has been applied to gold-colored metal compositions used in garnet settings, including materials associated with the Bohemian garnet-jewelry tradition.
