Midcentury 15.14 Carat Color-Change Sapphire & Diamond Ring

Dating to circa 1950, this platinum Midcentury ring features an extraordinary 15.14-carat natural, no-heat color-change sapphire. Oval mixed-cut and set in a simple four-prong setting, the sapphire displays deep blue to violet-purple coloration, shifting under different lighting conditions.

The sapphire's scale determines the ring's architecture. Rather than surrounding such a substantial stone with a halo, the jeweler leaves it visually open and concentrates the diamonds along the shoulders. Fourteen channel-set baguette-cut diamonds create crisp, stepped lines on either side, while six bead-set single-cut diamonds provide smaller points of light. Together, the accent diamonds weigh approximately 1.46 carats, with SI1-SI2 clarity and G-J color.

The long, straight facets of the baguette diamonds are the visual opposite of the broad oval sapphire. They don't compete with its color or size. Instead, they create a structured transition from the monumental center stone into the platinum shank.

A color-change sapphire responds differently to different light sources because its trace elements absorb portions of the visible spectrum. The result can be a noticeable shift in perceived color, commonly between blue or violet-blue and more violet or purple tones. “No heat” is also significant: it indicates that the sapphire has not undergone the heat treatment commonly used to alter or improve the appearance of corundum.
