Edwardian Albert Watch Chain with Enamel Football Fob

This Edwardian sterling silver Albert watch chain was made in Birmingham in 1907 and bears the maker’s mark W.W.C., attributed to William Walter Cashmore. The graduated curb-link chain features a traditional T-bar and swivel clasp and is accompanied by a sterling silver football fob made by Vaughton & Sons of Birmingham in 1908.

The circular fob features a hand-painted enamel plaque depicting a footballer on the field, surrounded by a raised decorative border. Albert chains were originally designed to secure a gentleman’s pocket watch and were often personalized with medals, coins, and sporting fobs. By the early 20th century, these accessories had become an expressive part of men’s dress, with football and other organized sports providing particularly popular subjects.

Vaughton & Sons was a prominent Birmingham firm of goldsmiths, silversmiths, and medallists, especially known for badges, medals, and sporting fobs during this period.
