Circa 1930 Art Deco Transitional-Cut Diamond Ring

Dating to circa 1930, this low-profile Art Deco ring is crafted in platinum and features a .53-carat round transitional brilliant-cut natural diamond, graded VS2 clarity and I color. The diamond sits within a crisply defined square frame.

On either side, triangular pierced panels are set with six old European-cut natural diamonds totaling .16 carats, graded SI2-I1 clarity and G-H color. Their arrangement gradually narrows toward the shank, carrying the eye outward from the center stone and giving the ring its wonderfully low, elongated profile.

Fine milgrain borders sharpen the setting's architecture, while engraved floral and wheat motifs introduce a softer vocabulary along the platinum shank. The result is distinctly Art Deco: strong geometry and symmetry balanced by delicate hand-worked ornament.

The center diamond also tells us something about the period. Transitional brilliant cuts occupy an important place between the old European cut and the modern round brilliant, reflecting the evolution of diamond cutting during the early 20th century. Rather than treating “transitional” as merely another diamond shape, it is worth recognizing it as evidence of a technology and aesthetic in motion.
