Circa 1950 Midcentury Diamond Step Ring

Dating to circa 1950, this 14KT white gold Midcentury engagement ring centers a .60-carat round brilliant-cut natural diamond with SI1 clarity and G color, secured in a four-prong raised setting. Twenty-four bead-set single-cut natural diamonds, totaling approximately .24 carats with VS1-VS2 clarity and E-F color, extend across the surrounding white gold and shoulders. Fine milgrain edging defines the diamond-set sections.

Rather than surrounding the center diamond with a conventional halo, the mounting is built in a series of graduated geometric levels. The diamond-set shoulders step downward from the elevated center, becoming progressively narrower as they approach the polished shank. Viewed from the side, the tiered construction becomes even more apparent.

This stepped architecture is a wonderful example of how geometry can create visual scale. The center diamond occupies only the highest level of a much larger composition, while the single-cut diamonds carry light outward and downward through the mounting. The setting makes the entire top of the ring participate in presenting the center stone.
