Circa 1810 Douglas of Cavers Carnelian Intaglio Fob

Dating to circa 1810, this Georgian fob is crafted in 9KT rose gold and set with a rectangular carnelian intaglio engraved with a remarkably detailed heraldic device.

At its center is a shield bearing a crowned heart beneath three stars, surmounted by an arm holding a broken spear. Below, a ribbon carries the archaically spelled motto “DOE OR DIE." Together, these elements identify the heraldry as that of the Douglas family of Cavers, a Scottish branch of the Douglas family. Historical descriptions of their arms and crest record the distinctive broken spear and “Do or die” motto.

The engraving is particularly effective in carnelian. Rather than functioning merely as ornament, every element carries heraldic information: shield, stars, crowned heart, crest and motto combine to communicate family identity in miniature.

Intaglio fobs were both personal objects and practical accessories. When engraved with heraldry, they could proclaim family identity and potentially serve as seals when impressed into wax. In this example, the imagery isn't simply decorative symbolism. It forms a recognizable heraldic vocabulary connected with the Douglas of Cavers family.

The archaic “DOE OR DIE” is especially wonderful. It's not a misspelling we need to tidy up. Historical sources record the motto in both “Doe or die” and modernized “Do or die” forms.
