Circa 1870 Victorian Bloodstone Starfish Intaglio Fob

Dating to circa 1870, this Victorian fob is crafted in 18KT gold and set with an oval bloodstone intaglio engraved with a starfish. 

The intaglio's simplicity gives way to considerably more ornament on the reverse. The gold back features a radiating, fluted design that sweeps outward from the articulated suspension fitting, creating movement around the otherwise compact circular form. A substantial gold jump ring lets the fob hang from a watch chain, guard chain, or other fitting.

Bloodstone, a dark green variety of chalcedony traditionally characterized by red inclusions, has a long history in engraved gems and seals. Its fine-grained structure makes it well suited to intaglio carving, while its dark surface allows an engraved image to read clearly. In the 19th century, people frequently used bloodstone for seals, signet rings, and fobs.

Starfish and other marine subjects appeared in 19th-century decorative arts during a period of growing fascination with the natural world. Weighing approximately 3.17 grams, this little fob rewards being turned over: an understated engraved gem on one side and richly modeled Victorian goldwork on the other.
