Victorian Smoky Quartz Cross Pendant

Dating to circa 1880, this substantial Victorian cross pendant is crafted in 15KT gold and set with four custom-cut natural smoky quartz stones totaling approximately 101.50 carats. Each stone is individually shaped to form one arm of the cross, creating a remarkably unified composition from four separate gemstones.

Rather than surrounding the quartz with heavy ornament, the narrow 15KT gold framework traces its edges, while the engraved bail introduces a small flourish.

Custom cutting can be key to understanding an antique jewel. Here, the smoky quartz wasn't simply selected and placed into a preexisting cross-shaped mounting. The four stones were cut to work together, with their shapes and facets creating the cross itself. The gemstones are both the material and the jewel's architecture.

At more than 100 carats, this is a wonderfully bold example of Victorian gemstone cutting, transforming smoky quartz into a sculptural cross through scale, geometry, and precision.
