Circa 1880 French Ruby Double Snake Ring
Dating to circa 1880, this French Victorian ring is crafted in 18KT gold as two intertwined snakes, each crowned with an oval ruby cabochon, totaling approximately 1 carat.
Serpents have appeared in jewelry for thousands of years and carried associations that included eternity, renewal, protection, and wisdom. In 19th-century Britain, the motif gained particular romantic significance after Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with a serpent engagement ring in 1839. Her love of symbolic jewelry helped reinforce the snake's popularity throughout the Victorian period, though its meaning was never limited to a single interpretation.
Stamped with French gold hallmarks and approximately size 6, this ring brings together two particularly expressive Victorian elements: the ancient symbolism of the serpent and the rich color of ruby cabochons, interpreted through fluid French goldwork.
The ring measures 11.8mm at the top, rises 4.3mm above the finger, tapering to 4.2mm wide and .8mm thick at the base of the shank. It is approximately a ring size 6.
