Circa 1980s Two-Tone Diamond Ring
Dating to the 1980s, this substantial 18KT two-tone gold ring centers a .58-carat round brilliant-cut natural diamond, graded VS2 clarity and G color. Flush-set into the broad band, the diamond sits close to the surface rather than rising above it in a traditional prong setting.
The shank features a stepped, multi-row design, with alternating yellow and white gold sections creating parallel bands across the top and shoulders.
Measuring approximately 8.6mm wide across the top, the ring gradually tapers toward the base of the shank. Its substantial proportions and layered two-tone construction give it the bold presence characteristic of much 1980s jewelry, without relying on additional gemstones or ornament.
A flush setting allows a gemstone to become part of the surface of a jewel rather than sitting above it. Here, that choice is fundamental to the design: raising the diamond in prongs would interrupt the ring's horizontal lines. By setting it nearly level with the surrounding gold, the jeweler preserves the architecture of the band while still giving the eye a clear focal point.
Appraised Value: $7,200
The ring measures 8.6mm wide at the top, rises 4.2mm above the finger, tapering to 5.6mm wide and 1.3mm thick at the base of the shank.
