Buckle rings were popular in the Victorian Era, and they are still popular today as romantic manifestations of love and commitment, whether given as an engagement ring, or a wedding ring.
At Isadoras, we have a wonderful selection of antique buckle rings that are as unique as the relationships that inspired them.
Today, as it was in the Victorian Era, the buckle ring symbolizes the sentimental, binding love between the giver and the wearer of the ring. The interlocking belt and the buckle represents how perfectly the suitors are attuned to one another. Vintage buckle rings often have loving endearments engraved on the inside of the band.
The buckle motif itself harkens back to the Order of Garter, the oldest British Order of Chivalry. Queen Victoria wore a buckle ring to represent her participation in the Order, which made the buckle a fashionable element of jewelry design. Buckle jewelry was popular in both the Victorian and Georgian Eras, and paid homage to the Order of the Garter, whose membership continues to be a true indication of royal favor.
Aside from eternal binding love, the buckle ring was also seen as a symbol of unbreakable loyalty and enduring memory. After the death of a family member or friend, wearing a buckle ring served as a tangible connection to the deceased and comforted those grieving by keeping memories of the lost loved one alive.
Whether passionately chivalrous, devoted to remembrance, or deeply in love, a buckle ring pledges strength and commitment.

We are very excited to highlight Victorian earrings as our Pieces of the Week. What we love best about these masterfully crafted earrings is their graceful ease – you care wear them day or night, dressed up or down. And, these Victorian earrings are so unique and diverse – they naturally evoke the spirit of an era.
The Grand Period of the Victorian Era (1860-1885), while one of invention and social change, was also a period of war and mourning. With Prince Albert’s death in 1861 and President Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, jewelry trends on both sides of the pond focused on the somber, sentimental, and memorial.
Solemn, dark-toned materials like jet, onyx, bog oak, and tortoiseshell, increased in popularity. Brightly colored jewelry was much less fashionable, since many thought it looked garish under the newly available electric lighting. Diamonds, however, glittered brilliantly in artificial light and were in high demand. Silver was discovered in 1860 and jewelers used it enthusiastically.
Earrings were a fashion essential. The trend was now for women to wear their hair pulled away from their face, cascading into curls down their back. Earlobes became the perfect canvas for earrings of all shapes and sizes.
Check out all the shapes and sizes of the gorgeous Victorian earrings in the antique heirloom collection at Isadoras. These exquisite earrings transition easily from elegant to everyday – you are sure to love them as much as we do.
